Past Gardens
2011
Earlier this year, on Saturday, May 14, 2011, the All Saints Garden Tour on Hilton Head Island, S.C. held its 24th Annual Garden Tour at six of the finest gardens in the area. The six gardens that were featured at this year’s event were as follows:
- “A Secret Garden???” of Kathy and Wayne Corley in Berkeley Hall where the harden is in the middle of the house with a stream that runs through it. There are mosses, ferns, ad ground cover lining the water, which is offset by splashes of color from annuals and a Zen garden, all placed in an Asian-style setting.
- “The Castle” of John Cardone in Berkeley Hall where a 15,000 square foot Tuscan-inspired manor sits proudly on the Okatie River. The stone-paved driveway is accented by tropical palm trees and the courtyard is filed with an array of fragrant pink roses. There are also iron gates and a footbridge where you can view the colorful Koi pond below. There is an expansive marble veranda where you can admire a magnificent old oak tree in the center of it all.
- ” Piece of England on the Banks of the Colleton River” of Derrick and Sue Key in Colleton River with the home possessing an elegant and gracious charm in a beautiful low country setting. Enjoy the walk down a long, winding driveway to the home. As you enter the courtyard you will enjoy a colorful display of flowers, plants, and seasonal shrubbery. The swimming pool is nestled on the banks of the Colleton River, surrounded by attractive flower beds.
- “A Secret Garden on a Conservation Area” of Mary Anne & Fred Gebler in Sun City’s Riverbend neighborhood, which is a Gardener’s Garden. It unfolds as you stroll through the arbor. The garden is planted with an assortment of perennials, annuals, and herbs, shrubs, and trees. The gurgling fountains provide a serene retreat with scenic views of the adjoining nature preserve area.
- “La Dolce Vita (The Sweet Life) Sanctuary” of Toni LaRose Gerken in Sun City’s Riverbend where you can enjoy the serenity of this lovely Tuscan estate’s gardens located on the banks of the Okatie River. You will feel the marsh breezes as you meander through this acre of palms, azaleas, live oaks, as well as various annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets.
- “Memory Matters Wandering Garden” on Rt. 278/Squire Pope Road, which is a safe haven for those with Alzheimer’s who are pacing and wandering. It is aesthetically beautiful, non-threatening, and secure with flowers along with calming aromas, fountains, wind chimes, and songbirds. There are raised gardens for their participants to plant vegetables or flowers.
